mixed feelings

I’m still processing the decision to return to Berlin. Obviously, Berlin is a wonderful city. The New York Times thinks so. They write about it every day. This must be a good choice.
I’ve been so busy I haven’t had much time to think about my time in Berlin. I didn’t even have time for a goodbye party. During the year away, I’ve read the police ticker and the Berlin blogs for kicks to find out whether Kreuzberg is burning. Perused the occasional Spiegel Online or Die Welt article.
Then not too long after the decision was made, I came across this article (Hamburg, not Berlin). At this point, it’s certainly not surprising to me. But somehow I still cannot get over the fact that someone chose to start the subtitle with the word N-ggerb-tch. I can’t even imagine opening up a crappy news magazine and seeing the second sentence on the page starting with the word N-ggerb-tch. I’m still trying to figure out what a “Southern looking” person means. All this time I was Southern and I didn’t even know it y’all!
So… all of that reminds me again that Berlin is in Germany is not just a movie. And Germany is one %^&^*%^ up place for us Southern looking people.
I still *heart* Berlin in a strange way. I’ve had some excellent times there and I’m definitely looking forward to it. It’s going to be an interesting year for sure.
