Goethe Institut Montreal

Occasionally, you hear German in the streets around my neighbourhood or spy little kids wearing a Ballack jersey. There are German parent groups, a Samstagschule, and the Alexander von Humboldt German International School.

And of course, there’s the Goethe Institut.

This bilingual parenting thing is a constant challenge of finding good resources. And if you actually care about the content, that’s a whole ‘nother ballgame. When we first arrived in Montreal, we stopped by the Goethe Institut to check out their library for children’s books. I’m sure someone thought they were doing a great service donating wonderful, authentic German books with racist images. And I’m sure just maybe it was an oversight that the book in question was catalogued and put on the bookshelf. Perhaps I will find out when I eventually write that letter I planned on writing. But that’s not what this post is about…

Goethe-Institut… whatever city I live in, I guess they’ll always be getting a bit of cash from me.

What’s on currently: “German Highlights” a not-too-shabby selection of contemporary German films (I’m not sure why I find it funny that the translation for Prinzessinenbad is Pool of Princesses but I do). Entire program here.

418 Sherbrooke Est, until 30 May 2008, 7 bucks (6 for students)
